Enhance Your Ride Safety with GMRS Radio
As we prepare for another incredible year of the Chippewa Valley Century Ride (CVCR), we want to ensure everyone has a safe and connected experience on the road. This year, we are excited to announce that the Chippewa Amateur Radio Club will be returning to provide essential communication support throughout the event.
What is GMRS?
The General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) is a land-mobile FM UHF radio service designed for short-distance, two-way voice communication. It is a step up from the standard walkie-talkies (FRS) you might find at big-box stores, offering higher power limits and the ability to use repeaters to significantly extend your range.
Licensing Requirements
It is important to note that while anyone can purchase a GMRS-capable radio, the FCC requires a license to operate one. The good news? There is no exam required. The license covers you and your immediate family for ten years. If you don’t have one yet, it’s a straightforward process to apply online through the FCC’s Universal Licensing System (ULS).
Superior Coverage for the CVCR
The Chippewa Amateur Radio Club maintains two repeaters, which provides excellent GMRS coverage across nearly the entire county. Club members will be actively monitoring GMRS repeater channel 462.600 with a tone of 110.9 located on Holcombe Ridge and will have the best coverage for the Bike Ride, and 462.700 with a tone of 110.9 located in Hallie for any calls, providing an extra layer of safety for our riders. Please note your GMRS radio must be set to repeater frequency with a tone of 110.9.
Bring Your Radio as a Backup
If you are a licensed operator and own a GMRS radio, we encourage you to bring it along as a backup communication method. While cell service is generally good, having a radio ensures you can reach help even in "dead zones".
Get Your Tech Ready
Not sure if your radio is set up correctly? We’ve got you covered. A member of the Radio Club will be available to assist you in getting your device onto the proper frequencies at the following times:
Saturday Night: During pre-ride festivities/check-in - 6-8pm
Sunday Morning: During Ride Check-in - 7-10am
Whether you are a tech enthusiast or just looking for an extra safety net, GMRS is a fantastic tool to have in your jersey pocket. We look forward to seeing you—and hearing you—out on the trails!
